| Changes to the SAT
|
| In March, 2005, the SAT underwent significant revisions. These revisions were intended to increase the relationship between the content of the SAT and the core competencies in reading, writing, and mathematics that colleges expect of their students. |

| Changes Effective March, 2005
|
- A third component, Writing, was added, with its own 200-800 score.
- This section resembles the old Writing Subject Test, which has been discontinued.
- It consists of one 25-minute essay and two multiple-choice sections.
- Multiple-choice sections test the ability to spot errors and to improve sentences and paragraphs.
- The verbal section was renamed "critical reading"
- Analogies were eliminated.
- Additional short (paragraph-length) reading passages were added
- Over 70% of questions are now based on passages (up from about 50% on the older test).
- More advanced topics were added to the mathematics section.
- Some Algebra II topics are now included. (The old test stopped with Algebra I.)
- The quantitative comparison type of question has been eliminated.
- Maximum total score now 2400, instead of 1600.
- Unlike the last (1995) revision, there was no change to the score scale for math or critical reading. Math and Verbal scores between 1995 and January, 2005 are directly comparable to the math and critical reading scores on the new test.
- Total test length now 3 hours and 45 minutes (up from 3 hours).

| The SAT has been changed many times over its history. |
| Another major overhaul to the SAT occurred in 1995. If you are a parent who remembers the old, pre-1995 SAT, the version your children will take looks significantly different from the test you took. Even the meaning of the scores has changed. The 200-800 scale is still used, but it was recalibrated so that average scores were closer to the midpoint of the scale: 500. As a result, scores from tests taken before 1994 are not directly comparable to those taken after. If you are curious to know the details, the College Board has published a report outlining how the SAT has changed over time [PDF]. |
